Rooted in History,
Inspired by Community
The name “Regalburg” is our playful nod to Bergregal—German for “mining rights”—and our town’s nickname, The Burg. While Bergregal isn’t directly tied to Walsenburg, coal shaped our story. From the Walsen mine (1876) to the Colorado Coalfield Wars and the Ludlow Massacre (1914), Walsenburg became known as “The City Built on Coal.” Our home, the Walsenburg Mercantile (est. 1904), supplied mining camps with food and goods. Revived in 2022 with 70+ local vendors, we continue that tradition—good food, craft, and community under one historic roof.
“A city built on coal. A deli built on community.”
